About Calcein Red-Orange AM

Calcein Red-Orange is a red-orange fluorescent molecule that penetrates the membranes of dead cells and is used to evaluate cell membrane integrity as well as esterase activity. Closely related is Calcein Red-Orange AM, which due to the acetoxymethyl (AM) modification, can passively diffuse across the membranes of live cells. While inside the live cell, Calcein Red-Orange AM is hydrolyzed by esterase into the fluorescent Calcein Red-Orange which can then be measured via fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometer, or fluorescent microplate reader.
