Description | CD41 (platelet glycoprotein IIb) is composed of two subunits (120 kDa a, alpha and 23 kDa b, beta) that interact with CD61 in the presence of calcium to form a functional adhesive protein receptor. Upon blood vessel damage, this receptor binds to a variety of proteins including von Willebrand factor, fibrinogen, fibronectin and vitronectin. CD41 is mainly expressed on megakaryocyte-platelet lineage, but generally belongs to the antigens that are expressed during early stages of hematopoietic differentiation. |
About CD41 and Biotin
CD41 | This gene encodes a member of the integrin alpha chain family of proteins. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate light and heavy chains that associate through disulfide linkages to form a subunit of the alpha-IIb/beta-3 integrin cell adhesion receptor. This receptor plays a crucial role in the blood coagulation system, by mediating platelet aggregation. Mutations in this gene are associated with platelet-type bleeding disorders, which are characterized by a failure of platelet aggregation, including Glanzmann thrombasthenia.
