Description Macrophage colony-stimulating factor, or M-CSF, is a secreted cytokine which influences hemopoietic stem cells to differentiate into macrophages or other related cell types. M-CSF is a key regulator of cellular proliferation, differentiation, and survival of blood monocytes, tissue macrophages and their progenitor cells. It enhances cytotoxicity, superoxide production, phagocytosis, chemotaxis, and secondary cytokine production in monocytes and macrophages.1 It binds to the Colony stimulating factor 1 receptor. M-CSF is known as one of the factors essential for osteoclast development.2
About M-CSF and Biotin
M-CSF The protein encoded by this gene is a cytokine that controls the production, differentiation, and function of macrophages. The active form of the protein is found extracellularly as a disulfide-linked homodimer, and is thought to be produced by proteolytic cleavage of membrane-bound precursors. The encoded protein may be involved in development of the placenta. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2011]
